Designer Breeds
All dog breeds are designers of some sort. Breeders mix different breeds of dogs to obtain specific characteritics and this is how most of the current breeds have come into exsistance. This process continues today and will continue until the end of time. If you want a pet and you are not interested in showing your dog in the show ring, then a designer may be what you are looking for. If you investigate designer breeds on the internet you will find that everyone has an opinion, but it is your decision, pick the pet that is the best fit for you and your family!
Shichon (Shih Tzu/Bichon)
Shichon is a Shih Tzu / Bichon mix. The breed also referred to as Teddy Bears or Zuchon. They are playful and lively, but also very gentle and calm. The temperament is that of a very gentle, self-assured and well mannered dog. The Shichon is friendly with everyone and love to just sit near you. The Shichon is Hypoallergenic, making them great for allergy suffers. They enjoy baths and are easy to groom. They are the ultimate lap dog!
Average weight...8 -14 lbs Grooming...every 6 - 12 weeks Training...Very trainable
Shorkie (Shih Tzu/Yorkie)
The Shorkie is very sweet and playful. They like almost everyone and are not normally afraid of strangers The Shorkie is a loveable, affectionate and cheerful pet. You will never lose a Shorkie as they are almost always under your feet. The Shorkie does not shed, so is a good pet for those that have allergies. This designer breed is very adaptable to almost any lifestyle, only wants to please you and wants to be your best friend.
Average Weight...6 - 10 lbs Grooming...every 6-12 weeks Training...Very trainable
Mal-Shi (Maltese / Shih Tzu)...aka (Cubby Bear)
The Mal-Shi is another fantastic hybrid cross, loveable, playful, wonderfully soft coat and easy to train. The Mal-shi is very similar to the Shichon, same body style, same temperament and same intelligence. For these reasons I have started to refer to them as the Cubby Bear...also we are from Chicago so the name fits. Cubbies are a small toy, normally 6-10 lbs when full grown. People will stop you on the street to ask about your Cubby...literally people stop you on the street.
Average weight... 6 - 10 lbs Grooming... every 6 - 12 weeks Training...very trainable
Morkie (Maltese / Yorkie)
Our Morkies are always first generation (F1) cross between registered Maltese and Yorkie parents. This is another case where the designer cross is a cuter, friendlier and more family oriented pet (my humble opinion). They normally have a very soft coat but do sometimes take on the wiry coat that you see on some Yorkies. This is a small toy size dog, 4 - 8 lbs is the average weight of our Morkies. Morkies crave attention, so don't think your Morkie will just lay on the back of the couch and watch the world go by. Morkies will be a big part of your family and will want to be with you but don't let them take over.
Average weight... 4-8 lbs Grooming... every 6 - 12 weeks Training...very trainable
Yorkiepoo (YorkShire Terrier / Toy Poodle)
This is probably one of the best know designer crosses. It takes two of the most popular toy size dogs to create this wonderful cross. The objective to any cross is to take the best of both breeds and create a perfect newpuppy. This doesn't always happen but just the length of time that the Yorkiepoo has been around should tell us that they are a special cross. The Toy Poodle and the Yorkie share a lot of traits, most of them very good. They are very personable and playful. Housebreaking a Yorkiepoo is normally fairly quick and did I mention that they love to learn tricks. This is a cross that will love training classes, kids, neighbors and more kids. A great choice for families...with kids.
Average weight...6-9 lbs Grooming... every 6-12 weeks Training...Highly trainable
Maltipoo (Maltese / Toy Poodle)
What can you say about such a sweet sweet cross. Both the Maltese and Toy Poodle are highly affectionate and this is almost always to case with the Maltipoo. Perfect for apartments or condo lifestyle but they would also love to have a yard to play in. The Maltipoo will get enough exercise indoors and can be considered a fair weather dog...only wants to go out on the pretty days. Kids love them, grandparents love them, and active adults love them. If you ever lose your Maltipoo the first place to look is on the back of the couch..
Average weight... 6 - 8 lbs Grooming... Every 6 - 12 weeks Training...Very trainable
Shihpoo (Shih Tzu / Toy Poodle)
I love the Shih Tzu crosses but you mix Shih Tzu with the Toy Poodle and you have a highly intelligent bundle of fun. With a little higher energy than the Shichon and Mal-Shi what you get is a family friendly pet, best friend, a go with you everywhere type of dog. Easy to train but hard to leave at home when you are just running to the store, they don't understand that they can't come in with you. Because they are highly trainable you should use this to your advantage and begin with pet classes. Puppies learn fast and since we all know "you can't teach and old dog new tricks" get your puppy to some classes early.
